This workshop is designed to introduce caregivers to the concept of gender inclusivity. Our goal is to align education between caregivers and school staff to reduce misinformation and increase the overall support network for gender expansive youth. Participants will be able to identify why gender inclusivity is important in educational environments; demonstrate awareness of how power and privilege show up in educational environments; distinguish between the concepts of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and romantic orientation; demonstrate awareness of developmental norms regarding gender identity formation in young children; increase competency in gender inclusive vocabulary; and demonstrate the use of correct pronouns in scenarios involving individuals of different gender identities.
The class is taught by B Harriman (He/They) - an experienced facilitator, educator and artist working to uplift and connect with other trans and gender-non conforming (TGNC) people and the organizations that seek to support them. He is currently the tween & teen group co-facilitator at the Ackerman Institute for the Family's Gender & Family Project.
The Gender & Family Project (GFP) empowers youth, families and communities by promoting gender inclusivity as a form of social justice in all the systems involved in the life of the family. GFP provides comprehensvie multidisciplinary services including clinical family therapy, community groups, research, and Gender Inclusivity Training for educators, mental health professionals and more. The Creating Gender Inclusive Schools series is designed to provide school staff and caregivers with the awareness, knowledge, and skills to create and maintain gender inclusive educational environments for youth.
